Malbec & Tannat, Cahors, South-West France | First of all, we would like to make clear that we are extremely pro the inclusion of several exclamation points in a given wine’s name. It really lightens the mood! We’d love to see this stylistic decision applied even to more classic wines, such as St-Emilion!!! or Chassagne-Montrachet!!! That being said, we can’t imagine a wine more deserving of the triple ! than Fabien Jouves’ A Table!!! Rosé, a punchy, buoyant blend of Malbec & Tannat. These are two boisterous & intense red wine grapes that outright refuse to take part in the creation of any simpering, delicate classically Southern French rosés, which are so pale in the glass you have to squint to find the colour pink. Made using part saignée method (which typically involves ‘bleeding’ off liquid from a tank of juice to help produce more concentrated flavour & colour) & part direct press (wherein grapes are grown and selected exclusively for rosé production, then gently pressed until the juice reaches a desirable colour), A Table!!! is a neon hot pink stunner like an electric guitar solo. Loud & uncomplicated, poppy bright red cherry, strawberry fruit roll-up, & a dash of effervescence upon initially opening.
Ugni Blanc, Gros Manseng, Muscat d’Alexandria, Cahors, France | Our favourite athleisure-styled rockstar of France’s South-West knocks it out of the park with this skin-contact wine. In the hills of Cahors Fabien Jouves (Mas del Périé) is making delicious, biodynamic wines from the region’s famous grape Côt (aka Malbec), along with a cast of lesser-known but very intriguing regional grapes. Three of these regional white grapes definitely steal the show here: Ugni Blanc, Gros Manseng, and Muscat of Alexandria are macerated together for 3 months in concrete and then aged a further 6 months, producing a perfectly balanced, quaffable yet complex orange wine. The tropical juiciness of Muscat and the ripe apricot texture of the Gros Manseng just cannot contain themselves in this summer, sunset party. Stewed yellow fruit, rose, citrus and spicy notes with refreshing acidity.
