Arguably on the very cutting edge of natural wine, Tschida combines lo-fi, biodynamic principles in the vineyard with an ultra-modern sensibility in the winery. Along the stunning Lake Neusiedlersee, his vines, most of them family-owned since the 1800s, are wild, botanical gardens, completely overgrown with cover crops to promote biodiversity, while in the winery, he uses high tech equipment to ensure the gentlest extractions. But the wine! This powerful skin-contact Gruner Veltliner bucks tradition in the best way, textured, opulent & honey-hued, not austere at all. The winemaking sounds deceptively simple: grapes were hand-harvested, destemmed, and foot-crushed, then half were skin-fermented for several weeks while the other half was direct-pressed, followed by one year in neutral oak and bottling without fining, filtration or added sulphur. Slightly oxidative in the Jura sense, majestic in every other — apple skin, sunchokes, jasmine, white pepper, salty fermented lemon, overripe pineapple, bouquet garni, bitter almond, wet granite & a wildly complex, lingering finish. An outstanding, otherworldly wine to cherish with reckless abandon.
