Carignan, Languedoc, France | A gorgeous-fresh-to market arrival of a frank, itch scratching, luscious showcase of the incomparable grape, carignan. After moving from England (due to a case of the LOVE BUG) to settle in the village of Caux, Joe has taken up a few hectares of vines growing on the old lava flows of a long extinct volcano in the area. The carignan sees a six day, whole bunch maceration extracting fine, sandy tannins. The basalt soils cling to the robust and organically tended grapes, inching the minerality ever-higher. The smell of drinking with an overflowing wine bar crowd on a small French side street on a moist February morning, paprika, laying asphalt, violette de Bordeaux fig sap, fallen bark in the woods, dust, salt & driving cranberry. Enjoy while listening to Ahmad Jamal’s 1960 album, ‘Happy Moods’.
Grenache Gris, Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc, Cinsault, Languedoc, France | A pensive, stirring & zero-zero representation of what can be created from southern France’s rich terroirs. Welcome to the cool, new, South-of-France cat in town, Joe Jefferies! After moving from England (due to a case of the LOVE BUG) to settle in the village of Caux, Joe has taken up some handsome vines residing on old lava flows from a long extinct volcano in the area. A (20%) blend of vivacious grenache gris, the rich-greeness of grenache blanc & the spicy florality of grenache noir all from 2019, melded with (80%) grenache gris, noir & savoury cinsault from 2020. The basalt soils seem to have their claws dug deep across this whole lineup, with inexhaustible mineral freshness, how ScrUmPtiOuS! All of the grapes were given a six day maceration, and co-fermented in each vintage to promote lasting cohesion & tender tannins. A tension wielding wonder with a backbone of underripe raspberry acidity, whiffs of breezy and well integrated VA (volatile acidity), hot dust, dark flowers, cherry and pit, fresh herb harvest, ensnaring tannins & an enviable concentration like a 23-year-old learning to do their taxes. Enjoy while reading anything by Aaron Ayscough.
Terret Blanc, Terre Gris, Ugni Blanc, Languedoc, France | Dubbed by our writer pal Aaron Ayscough as, “The Grand Cru of the Herault”, this one rests on a throne all its own and we're thrilled to welcome it for the very first time to Ontario. Joe Jefferies is a self-taught winemaker, and farms 4.5 hectares of organic vines on volcanic basalt soils around Caux in southern France. A blend of direct pressed (unoaked) Chablis-esque terret blanc (30%) and acid-flaunting terret gris (20%) from the same plot, with the swanky aromatics of ugni blanc (50%), all co-fermented into inseparable unison. White clay, sucking on a lemon, VA (volatile acidity) that licks each tastebud individually, astringency like chewing a young branch, softened almond, laboriously pushing a boulder up a hill for all eternity type salinity & a welcome ending of bee propolis. Enjoy now or in a few years, this wine is timeless but could handle some age beautifully.
