Despite the fact that the word Riesling is blatantly in its name, Welschriesling bears no relation to the other great Riesling we all know & love. Welschriesling is way more chilled out than regs Riesling, delicately aromatic & mutable, stylistically more akin to a Sylvaner or even a Chard. In this case, old oak & the distinct minerality of the Scheppes’ Opok soils (a mixture of limestone and clay, rich in minerals and marine fossils) imparts the grape with smokiness, style & complexity. Farmed biodynamically with no fining, filtration, or sulfites, this a perky little ponytail of a white, your most wholesome & agreeable pal, who knows the rules to every card game & always remembers to text you on your ‘friendship anniversary.’ The nose offers a light musk of yesterday’s perfume: aloe water, salty dried algae on a cliff, hint-of-a-hint of lime zest, stalactite prickles & under-its-breath vanilla whispers.
