Sebastopol, USA | Few wines speak to California’s natural wine revolution as well as this full & sultry red from Martha Stoumen, a leader in low intervention winemaking. Martha often worked with Nero d’Avola during her time at COS in Sicily, a grape known for producing a deep, dark wine with a core of savoury black fruit. When done with a deft hand, Nero d’Avola can reach new heights of elegance, like an oxblood mink on a hot summer’s night, impossibly plush and rich. This blackberry beauty was built for the cellar, structured for the shelf & demands to be drunk right now, especially if you’re in the mood for immediate gratification. Acid shines bright like a streetlamp on an empty, suburban street at night, where the thrill of teenage shenanigans puts a spring in your step. Destemmed and fermented in tank, then aged in barrel for 30 months and bottled without fining or filtration. Dark, forest fruit and black plum skin, blackberry stain on a white t-shirt, smushed cherry, dark cocoa, tomato leaf, plump & dusty florals & tarragon stem tannins. Discover with a decant and pair with hedonists, hot girls & an indie sleaze moment of your very own.

Zinfandel-related Clones, Vermentino, Mendocino County, US | A full zinf-in-meal! Martha is a significant part of the New California winemaking movement, with worldly wine experience and natural vine growing wisdom. While the soils in these parcels have been planted to grapes for over 100 years, these ‘young vines’ of zinfandel-related clones (primitivo, rockpile, dupratt, dempel) are, on average, less than 15 years old. All clones were harvested together, co-fermented whole cluster, and after a month total on stems and skins, pressed to old oak barrels. The vermentino was gently foot tread, pressed and fermented in stainless steel before blending. After making a serious ‘Sophie’s choice’, she narrowed it down to just 10 barrels from the 2019 vintage that would progress forward in the aging process – meaning this wine spent 18 months in barrel AND an additional 14 months bottle aging before release = 32 months total! FUN FACT! This wine throws a flirty Californian wink at Côte-Rôtie, where viognier may be blended into syrah as a means to lift its aromatics. MINT, cigar box, wild blackberry, baking spice, and ancho chili — lemon zest from the splash of vermentino – sumac & fine, taught & dusty tannins (Venturi Vineyard’s signature). Pair with lots of friends & a Martha inspired dinner party! Winemakers note for contemplation: “as much as this wine is a child with an old soul, it’s an expression of wise elders who are children at heart.”

Sebastopol, USA | Making its debut in Ontario for the very first time, is this rare, single-vineyard red from Martha Stoumen, a leader of California’s natural winemaking movement. Farmed from the meticulously kept Ricetti Vineyard in Mendocino County with vines dating back to 1948, this old vine Carignan gets a brand new lease on life as a decorated member of the Academy with a lifetime achievement award. Brava! A triple threat of Burgundian depth, Italian sizzle and classic, California pedigree, made possible by Martha’s deft work in the cellar, highlighting this wine’s effortlessly modern proposition of bright, spicy fruit and delicately floral tannins. Made only every couple of years in limited quantities so save it for those worth inviting back. Whole cluster fermented in tank, aged for 24 month in neutral French oak and bottled without fining or filtration. Brambly red fruit, cherry pit, black forest cake, cinnamon heart, dried rose bouquet, five spice, silk lining, loving the smell of gasoline & loving yourself all over again. Pair with cigarettes in bed and Ambrose Slade’s If This World Were Mine.
