Meet ‘Festival’, a highly consumable red blend of Pinot noir (light freshness!), Refošk (herby inky acid!) & Cabernet Sauvignon (structure & savoury tannin!), from Istria, Slovenia. Korenika & Moškon are family-owner biodynamic winery championing delicious wines made consciously. Expect a gently brooding, leathery nose balanced by calendula, Ikea lingonberry juice box, blood orange squeeze & fresh wine gummy package. At first sip, plums, overgrown herbs, ripe raspberry jam and the comfort of a denser dose of tannins. Pair with stuffed cabbage rolls, campfires and calling your mother.
Malbec, Cahors, France | Leave it to Fabien Jouves to recuperate the oft-underrated grape Malbec into a juicy, fresh-faced crusher ready to drink now! The name is a play off the esteemed Burgundy appellation Hautes-Côtes-de-Nuit, a wink wink nudge nudge that this isn’t your whatever-sounding French red but rather, a slightly edgy, natty red with a mischievous twinkle in its eye. Farmed biodynamically and fermented and aged for six months in tank, this almost reads like a mixed berry salad in the glass, all mulberry, cherry and spiced plum. Liquorice nibs, blackberry panna cotta, vanilla yogurt and saddle leather with velour tracksuit tannins and tangy raspberry seed acidity. A touch of earth brings some much-needed levity to this full, fruit-driven & food-friendly stunner. Find it near the BBQ, commiserating with the other grill dads about when to flip that bad boy over.
Grenache, Syrah, Loire Valley, France | Exciting new discoveries are often unexpected & unplanned. Laurent is an incredibly talented former chef come natural winemaker. A rare prize, in both maker and outcome, a one-time delicious project, directly a result of climate change, intuition & ingenuity. This cuvée, a collaboration brought on by a devastating frost in his vineyard that forced him to source organic fruit for the first time, was originally going to be 100% Syrah from Laurent’s friend’s vineyard in Vaucluse, but in the eleventh hour it was blended with beautifully spiced Grenache from Gard, in Southern France. The grapes were destemmed and fermented on skins for five days for this gently tannic cherub. Ruby tinted, tasting like throwing raspberries into your friend’s mouth from across the room, herby mortar and pestle leftovers & cooking down the frozen summer plums you saved (good job wee squirrel). Pour alongside your hopes, your dreams & your determination to make them all come true whatever obstacles you face along the way.
