País, Cinsault, Aramón & San Francisco, Itata Valley, Chile
A gently murmuring light red blend begging for a chill and lulling us into a cool spring with its dulcet tones and hues. Winemakers Daniela & Pablo of Vinos Mingaco are huge proponents for minimal intervention winemaking, but with goals that span much farther than just their vineyards (can you say ACTIVE REFORESTATION!?). After transitioning their home site, this plot of over 100 year old, ungrafted vines is on its way to regenerative agriculture. An airy and dry coastal location that sees hot days, cool nights and sits on basaltic soils results in higher, balancing acidity levels. A tender and versatile blend of tart país (50%), floral cinsault (40%), herbaceous aramón (5%) & mysterious san francisco (5%). Purple flower, mouth of a cave, overripe strawberry, pennyroyal, Earth dust, dusk & a needle-point-fine structure. Pour alongside your favourite legume dish!
Malbec, Cahors, France
Leave it to Fabien Jouves to recuperate the oft-underrated grape Malbec into a juicy, fresh-faced crusher ready to drink now! The name is a play off the esteemed Burgundy appellation Hautes-Côtes-de-Nuit, a wink wink nudge nudge that this isn’t your whatever-sounding French red but rather, a slightly edgy, natty red with a mischievous twinkle in its eye. Farmed biodynamically and fermented and aged for six months in tank, this almost reads like a mixed berry salad in the glass, all mulberry, cherry and spiced plum. Liquorice nibs, blackberry panna cotta, vanilla yogurt and saddle leather with velour tracksuit tannins and tangy raspberry seed acidity. A touch of earth brings some much-needed levity to this full, fruit-driven & food-friendly stunner. Find it near the BBQ, commiserating with the other grill dads about when to flip that bad boy over.
Xinomavro, Macedonia, Greece
Family-owned for several generations, this winery previously sold their grapes until recently, when Apostolos Thymiopolos left to study oenology and returned to the winery to make grapes under his own label with a particular emphasis on the powerful Greek grape, Xinomavro. Kinda like Pinot Noir with an extra kick of spice and body, this Xinomavro comes from younger vines than his signature wine, Earth and Sky and spends 8 months in concrete. Medium-bodied with perfumed red fruit and a minty herbal twist, the kind of wine that absolutely no one in the world could have a problem with, like the wine equivalent of finding a twenty dollar bill on the street.
