Nebbiolo, Piedmont, Italy

All rise for this glorious soliloquy to elegant, light-hearted Nebbiolos of the past, courtesy of the illustrious Vajra family of Piedmont, Italy. Inspired by historical descriptions of Nebbiolo – including a 1606 note from the Italian royal family’s jeweler and a 1787 note by Thomas Jefferson (actually) – this fresh-faced, deep and spicy red draws inspiration from fresher, easy-drinking Nebbiolos made before the rise of full-bodied Barolo. Farmed from younger vines, this was macerated partially whole cluster, almost like a vin nouveau but with lots of ripe, fruity structure. Whizz-bang cherry, earthy spice, a whiff of wood and flint, a slight spritz & an acid that jumps two stairs at a time. Chill it down, savour slowly and pair with cheap pork chops.
