A lusty n’ mineral Hungarian hidden gem. Winemaker Bence Szilágyi makes stunningly expressive, zero-zero wines out of a 200-year-old stone barn-turned-winery in the western Hungarian village of Barnag, near Lake Balaton. Buying land in the area is near impossible, and so Bence works with five limestone-stuffed hectares, half being rentals he farms himself, the other half being purchased grapes from a trusted local farmer. The jumping, jiving ‘Diszkó’ is a blend of floral, fruity riesling (60%, with partial skin contact) and later-harvested, mineral, plush furmint (40%), fermented and aged between stainless steel and neutral barrels. The grassy, petrol-y air of a rural gas station stop, no person in sight, lime powder, creamed honey essence, mineral muse, a brown pear finish & then a second, richer, cold butter finish! Pour alongside Gertrude Stein’s Tender Buttons.
