Grand Vin De Barnag

Grand Vin De Barnag

Welcome to GWI’s first, and definitely not last, Hungarian producer! Grand vin de Barnag winemaker Bence Szilágyi makes wine in a 200-year-old stone barn-turned-winery in the western Hungarian village of Barnag, close to the volcanic hills of Lake Balaton. Always with a low-intervention mindset, 2017 marked Bence’s first *unofficial* vintage with a 400 bottle rollout, and in 2020 he dispensed with sulphur additions altogether. Buying land in the area is near impossible (due to tourism trends), and so Bence works with five limestone-stuffed hectares, half being rentals he farms himself, the other half being purchased grapes from a local negociant farmer. The half he looks after sees a no-till approach, choosing to rely on naturally occurring flora as a beneficial cover crop. FUN FACT! As though winemaking isn’t enough, Bence also runs a wine import agency (Disco Wines) & a wine bar in Budapest (Bar Bizarre), hellloooo TRIPLE THREAT. We are so proud to welcome the grandest vin in Barnag to our GW family!
