Clau de Nell
A DREAM REALIZED IN ANJOU
Anne-Claude Leflaive single-handedly changed the course of Burgundy as head of the historic Domaine Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet, a tireless advocate for the environment and among the first to introduce organic and biodynamic viticulture to her vineyards. As Domaine Leflaive soared, becoming one of the great Domaines of the world, so too did her efforts to shape the next generation of winemakers, leading her to open a wine school and a business helping young, biodynamic growers export their wines abroad. Always rooting for the underdogs! Through her business, she met the owners of what would become Clau de Nell – a gorgeous, sprawling estate in Anjou, the heart of the Loire’s natural wine movement, with incredible soils and ancient vines (some up to 100 years old!) – who were struggling to keep the winery afloat. Leflaive, who was already helping them convert to biodynamics, bought the estate to bring it back from the brink of bankruptcy and hired on experienced winemaker Sylvain Potin to bring her vision of vibrant, biodynamic wines to life. Deeply personal, tightly allocated, and easily some of the most coveted wines of the Loire, each wine is a star in its own right, a reflection of her elegant, precise & almost spiritual approach to making wine. Now continued by her husband Christian, daughter Claire and Sylvain, Clau de Nell continues to astonish today, and we couldn’t be happier to represent their thought-provoking wines in Ontario.
