From the historically grape-abundant region of Pécs in Southern Hungary, Ibolya and Géza Galán’s 2.5 hectares of no-till, biodynamic vines live an enviable life. Since purchasing Vaskapu Kastély (Iron Gate Castle) in the area of Mohács, Géza wants his zero-zero wines to impart a sense of “genius loci” or ‘spirit of a place’ – a unique way to think about and reflect terroir as an expression of the culture and disposition. In this case, to him that means a warmth of celebration and a thriving community. CUTE FACT! Their young children, Gáspár and Zsigmond, are consistently out in the vines and cellar, creating a strong bond for the future generation #thefutureofnaturalwine. Their sub-Mediterranean climate is cool with constant breezes from the Danube, protection from the Mecsek Mountain, and a long n’ warm growing season with nearly no risk of frost – aka impeccable conditions for low-intervention viticulture! Within the soil are all the accents of volcanic bedrock, with loess, clay, forest loam and a high lime content, which shakes the mineral character up and satiates an air of earthly yearning deep within.
