Pino Roman
We were instantly charmed by Ignacio Pino Román, known mainly as Nacho, who makes characterful and exacting wine in the hidden gem of Guarilihue, a warm community in Chile’s Southern Biobío region. Here he combines over 15 years of international experience with low-intervention wines he’s proud to stand behind from ungrafted bush vines that often, incredibly push one hundred years old. His wines reflect soil, climate, grape and most importantly the people behind them, growers who rely on traditional and local wisdom to preserve Itata’s vine growing history stretching back to the 1550s. Foremost his goal is to promote sustainable, human-scale agriculture that fosters the wellbeing of his community by paying farmer’s above market rates, while making delicious wines that elevate the international profile of his region. And it’s working! In 2022 Nacho was named Winemaker Revelation of the Year in Chile’s top wine publication, Descorchados and he’s been highlighted in Decanter as one of the most promising winemaker’s in Chile.
